We , the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, came into the Diocese of Thrissur, Kerala on 22nd May 1990. Initially the sisters stayed in Rev.Fr. Joseph Pulickan’s house at Aranattukara. He was instrumental in getting necessary documents from the Archdiocese of Thrissur and to get the property to build the community at Thaikkattussery. Later on 14th November 1990, we got a place at Thaikkattussery, adjacent to the church premises. The church was under Ollur Forane and priests came daily for Eucharistic celebration. It was not a parish church at that time. On 9th May 1992, the community building was blessed and inaugurated by Most. Rev. Joseph Kundukulam who was the Archbishop of Thrissur. The Sisters entered their new abode on 22nd May 1992. The sisters were engaged in parish activities like teaching catechism, family visits and preparation for Eucharistic celebration. At present we are involved in socio-pastoral work, hostel for working girls/students, tailoring centre, tuition classes, play home and take part in the meetings of Alcoholic Anonymous group.
Euphrasia Social centre (Good Shepherd Hostel)
In 1998, the sisters began the hostel for working girls/students as it was a great need at that time. Many working women and students are helped to find a safe shelter in our hostel.
Tailoring Centre
Through the tailoring centre many lower middle class young women were trained for cutting and sewing. They learned to help themselves and some of them are helped to improve their economic status too.
Play Home
The children from the locality are helped to build up the basic interest for education, courage and socialization through this play school.
Alcoholics Anonymous group
One of our sisters is involved in the parish work as animator of Alcoholics Anonymous group. Regularly the committee meets the persons in their families who are addicted to alcohol. Once a month, group prayer is conducted by the committee along with the persons concerned followed by discussions/meeting. Awareness classes are given on the basis of alcohol consumption. We are happy to see and hear the good response among some of them.
Tuition classes
After the school hours the children from the locality come to the convent for extra coaching classes. A girl is appointed to take tuition for them.
Chiyyaram
The Chiyyaram community is an extension of Thaikkattussery. Presently we are total four sisters in both the communities together.Chiyyaram community is a gift from Sr. Electa Ponthekkan, as it was her a parental property. On 24th April 2017 the blessing of the community was done by Mar. Andrews Thazhath the Archbishop of Trissur.
Here, we do Pastoral work which involves, once a week prayer meetings with the women in this locality, counseling, health-care and tailoring classes for women and girls. The women come to the convent to learn to make Rosaries.
Health care
The sisters visit the families, give special care to the sick and the infirmed and give first aid treatment to those in need . Encourage them to go to the hospital if they need further medical checkup. Since there are a few bedridden patients, we network with palliative care unit of Pallissery run by the Franciscan sisters of st.Clare. They visit the patients and assess their need and those who require hospitalization are taken for admission.
